Happy recently played in his first US Open qualifier on May 5th at Old Oakland Country Club. Cards an (80) with a 10!
Happy got off to a slow start with a double bogey on the first hole but soon found a few pars and a bogey before reaching the par 4 7th hole. What happened next would seal his fate in his first ever bid at qualifying for the US Open.
The 7th hole is a 391-yard Par 4 that demands an accurate tee shot. With Out of Bounds on the right, a creek in front and on the left side, there is little room for error. Happy took out a 3 iron and sends his first ball sailing out of bounds with little hope for a friendly bounce. He re-tee's and this time using his driver, he launches one too long and into the OB section that impedes into the right side of the fairway about 130 yards from the green. His 3rd attempt clipped a tree limb and splashed down into the creek just in front of the front tee box. After looking for his first two balls, Happy had to drop in front of the tee boxes where he then split the fairway down the middle, landed his next shot on the green and completed the hole with a simple two-putt for a crowd pleasing (10). Walking off the green his caddie lightens the mood with a quote from the movie Tin Cup: "I heard you put up a monster number there." Both laugh it off and Happy would go on to shoot one under par the rest of the way in the rain! So with a double start and a (10) on a Par 4, Happy still carded an 80 and he was far from last. "Well, Better Luck Next Year!"
